Sustainable tree tags made of lahnur®
Making orchards part of daily life and offering farmers fair income possibilities is exactly what members of the integrated rural development team (ILE) of the 12 municipal communities in Franconian Switzerland, are actively trying to implement. They introduced the Yellow Ribbon, to release trees on municipal land for harvesting and, as a further consistent step, decided to only use juice made from these local “free” fruit trees, in the town halls and to actively communicate this sustainable initiative to local associations. In the picturesque landscape of Franconian Switzerland, this initiative is bringing tradition and sustainability into harmony. This measure, which promotes both local culture and the environment, has had a positive impact on the region.
The Project
The orchards shape the Swiss Franconian landscapes: every year when the cherry blossoms the region is transformed into a white blossom paradise; in the summer apples, quinces, pears, plums and Mirabelle plums ripen on the sunny slopes. For those who don’t own an orchard they can look for the yellow ribbons in autumn. The town mayors of the ILE, “Swiss Franconian AKTIV”, together with farm workers have commissioned 400 fruit trees for harvesting.
A creative way of attracting attention to this laudable initiative is tree pendants, designed in collaboration with the Promedia Design agency from Erlangen. Although they seem simple at first glance they carry a deeper message. These tree pendants are made from lahnur®, a paper material particularly impressive due to its recyclability and durability. In contrast to conventional materials, lahnur® remains in the recycling circle and thus contributes to conserving resources.
The printing house Kollin Medien GmbH in Neudrossenfeld made a significant contribution to the production of these tree pendants, reporting “The quality of the lahnur® paper is excellent,” “It allows easy printing, is recyclable and water-repellent which is perfect for outdoor use. In addition to this further processing of the material was optimal.”
These tree pendants are tied to the yellow ribbon around the trees. This has also been implemented in Baden-Wuertemberg in Germany and is now also represented in federal states such as lower Saxony and Heston where it promotes legal fruit picking and reduces food waste.
For centuries fruit trees, including varieties such as the Schafnase apple tree, have shaped the landscape in the Swiss Franconian area. To combat their decline, the Lias-Grube environmental station founded the “treasures of Franconian network in 2017 which promotes the protection of ancient Franconian plants and animal species, the “treasure map” is an interactive online map of the network showing all locations of the picking allowed campaign.
The Swiss Franconian orchard initiative is a prime example of how regional commitment, and the interaction of various associations can achieve a sustainable impact.
