Fire Protection Class

What Does “Fire Protection Class” Mean?

A fire protection class describes how a material behaves in the event of fire — considering combustibility, smoke production, flaming droplets and falling debris.
Across Europe, materials are classified according to DIN EN 13501-1, which ranges from A1 (non-combustible) to F (easily flammable).
Additional indicators rate smoke development (s1–s3) and flaming droplets (d0–d2). Knowing the exact fire protection class is mandatory for many applications in construction, transport and public spaces.

Relevance in Material Development

For technical non-wovens and specialty papers, correct fire-protection classification is essential to meet legal requirements and safety standards. Key benefits of fire-tested materials include:

  • Certified safety in accordance with European norms

  • Approval for use in safety-critical environments

  • Reduced smoke and toxic emissions

  • Protection of lives and infrastructure during an emergency

Fire-behaviour testing is particularly crucial for wallcoverings, ceiling elements and facing materials used in public buildings and vehicles.

Importance for Lahnpaper Products

Lahnpaper offers a broad portfolio of specialty papers and non-wovens that serve as wallcoverings or as base materials for industrial and commercial finishing processes such as printing, coating or embossing.
