Speciality papers are types of paper with specific properties or functions that are developed for particular applications. In the paper industry, this term refers to all types of paper that do not fall into standard categories such as printing or packaging papers. Such speciality papers are produced by specialist manufacturers and are used wherever conventional paper reaches its limits – for example, where there are extreme requirements for tear resistance, weather resistance or technical functionality, or to achieve specific visual and tactile effects in design.
Essentially, any type of paper that has been specifically developed for a particular purpose and possesses properties that go beyond those of ordinary paper is considered a speciality paper. Speciality papers often have a specific material composition or treatment – such as reinforcement with synthetic fibres or special coatings – in order to achieve exceptional performance characteristics. It is important to note that such papers have been specifically developed for demanding industrial, printing, design or security-related applications and are therefore usually produced by manufacturers specialising in speciality papers.
These include, for example, weather-resistant maps and posters, as well as tear-resistant labels and outdoor signage, security papers (such as banknote or ID card paper with watermarks) for documents, decorative textured papers for high-quality packaging and creative printing projects, and technical filter papers for industrial processes. All these specialised paper products are manufactured specifically for certain applications and fall under the category of speciality paper.
