The application
People and their forms of expression are at the heart of the book ‘Menschen zeichnen’ (Drawing People) by Lena Skaya, published by Hermann Schmidt Verlag. The work introduces readers step by step to the art of figure drawing – but it is not only the content that makes the book special: the choice of material is also consistently tailored to the theme.
Every book published by Hermann Schmidt is conceived as a total work of art: content, design and material form a deliberately composed triad. This is also the case with the publication ‘Menschen zeichnen’ (Drawing People). In its search for the right material, the publisher came across lahnur® from Lahnpaper – and was immediately impressed. ‘The hands decide for the head,’ says publisher Bertram Schmidt-Friderichs, emphasising the importance of haptics and material selection for publications.
The publishing house collaborated with Offizin Scheufele in Stuttgart to produce ‘Menschen zeichnen’. lahnur® was used for the book cover. As lahnur® has proven itself in print and is appealing to the touch, it will also be used in future projects by Hermann Schmidt Verlag – fortunately, another book is already in the pipeline.

Lena Skaya is dedicated to the diversity of forms, colours and the multifaceted nature of human expression. After studying at the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, she travelled from Europe to East Asia as an expat designer, enriching herself with new foreign languages and forms of expression. She then studied illustration at the Leonardo Campus in Münster. There, her special talent for drawing people and passing on this knowledge to other students was noticed. Professor Felix Scheinberger – himself an author at Hermann Schmidt Verlag – brought her to the attention of the publishing house. This led to the book ‘Menschen zeichnen’ (Drawing People).
Today, Lena Skaya lives in Münster as a freelance artist. She offers courses and workshops and combines figurative and informal elements in her own work with a conscious focus on the aesthetics of imperfection.

The material
For printed content that needs to be emphasised, lahnur® offers a combination of tactile and functional properties. It is a durable material that supports longevity and takes environmental considerations into account. The material has a soft and natural feel.
It is suitable for all common printing processes, can be further processed in a variety of ways (e.g. grooving, creasing, folding) and is available with FSC® certification. lahnur® is white, uncoated and available in weights of 110, 150 and 200 g/m². It is offered as roll and sheet goods in the standard stock size of 70 x 100 cm.
